OlyBLOG Features:

Is the Olympics everything you believe?

Do You Believe ... out of the blue VANOC could
petition the court for an injunction to shut down
the folksy little Olympia bistro on Denman St,
maybe just as Canada's 2010 Olympics start.

Olympia co-owner, Mosi Alvand asks,
How would you feel if you were in my position?

His question isn't entirely rhetorical.

He wants to know what you think about the Olympics.
... click here for Mosi's history - he's a client and a friend...

More precisely, Mosi wants to know how you would improve the Olympics and make it a better overall experience for Olympic athletes and Host regions.

He's asking because no one else will ...
well, almost no one.

  • Vancouver's mainstream news media won't risk asking your opinion
    in a forum
like this because they can't control your response.

For obvious reasons the IOC also won't ask what you think, and neither will VANOC or Olympic sponsors like Coca-Cola, McDonalds, GM, RONA, or RBC ... all corporations that generate incredible revenue and increase their visibility by leveraging Olympic affiliations.

No one goes looking for trouble.

If they wanted to know what you think
they would have asked years ago.

Mosi Alvand (above), co-owner of the Olympia Restaurant

    Apparently it's true.
The medium is the message in the global village.
    Who knew?

    other points to ponder
    . . . . . . . .

Has your opinion of the Olympics changed?

    Do Olympic organizations treat athletes
fairly and with the respect they deserve?

Do You Believe ... With Glowing Hearts
the Olympics is still economically viable?

How would you modernize the Olympics?

Will Vancouver benefit in the way politicians
and civic leaders led you to believe in the
beginning - especially during the Bid?

Would you encourage other cities to Host the Olympics?

Is it ethical that the IOC pays local newspapers and television broadcasters to promote, in such an orchestrated skewed manner, the Olympic side of the Olympic story?

Are you surprised how the 2010 Olympics rolled out?

Is it sporting that some Olympic sponsors
generate such high profit while Olympic Athletes
and Host regions get smothered in frustration and debt?

NBC will advertise to over 3 billion people during the 2010 Olympics.

Host Region Deficits: SLC 2002 $1.2 Billion, Athens 2004 $12 Billion, Turin 2006 threatened bankruptcy two months before the big event, Beijing 2008 $40 Billion farce, Vancouver 2010 into it for $6 Billion+ and climbing, London 2012 already $20 billion in overruns and still 2.5 years to go.We believe the trend is out of control.

Do you believe the Olympics needs fixing?

The IOC wants you to believe (like George W Bush did about the war) that the issue is black and white. Their enduring subtle mantra, "you are either with the Olympics or against the Olympics" leaves zero wiggle room.

Their message and process is unfair, inflammatory and un-sportsmanlike.

On the other side of the coin, people who are anti-Olympic simply want to kill the Games, but again we find this strategy irresponsible because there is daily, overwhelming proof the Olympics inspires billions, especially youth.

So ...  what do you believe?

Please use the COMMENT area below to share your views.

It's not necessary, but we urge you to use your real name
(email addresses will not be published)

Whatever your position, please comment rationally and thoughtfully, with a goal to help improve the Olympics.

Work towards a solution to help optimize and more effectively manage Olympic economics. The tired, old-school IOC business model has recently taken too big a bite out of too many host cities with many more in the breech - Vancouver being one.

Make your opinion count ... but if you go off topic, are libelous or abuse this discussion, your comment will not be displayed.

Own the Podium? Sure.

But WHO actually owns it?

The official creed of the Olympics is a quote by the founding father of modern day Games, Baron de Coubertin. He said,

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

The Olympic motto consists of three Latin words Citius, Altius, Fortius, which means, "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." The 1924 motto is meant to encourage athletes to embrace the Olympic spirit and perform to the best of their individual abilities.

No where does it imply that winning the most gold medals for your country is part of the agenda. In fact it implies exactly the opposite.

The IOC maintains that it doesn't actively encourage countries to collectively win the most gold medals, but on the other hand they also don't institute anything to ensure the Games are not turned into corporate money grabs.

In fact, IOC sponsorship and partnership business models encourage a win-at-all-costs mentality. It is the reason they have doping, fraud, bribery, and once again "ticketing scandals."

The IOC invites young people to compete in the Olympics using the original Creed & Motto. But when it comes to delivering on the promise they fall incredibly short.

The Olympics today isn't as much about sport as it is about money and profit for a select handful of elites.

Priorities changed over the years and so too should their Creed & Motto.

Real journalism consists of
what someone doesn't want published, all the rest is public relations." George Orwell
